The Importance of a Window with a View
Whether we realize it or not, our environment has a major influence on our overall health. With that in mind, knowing simple home modifications and considerations can greatly impact how well we are able to age and interact with our community. Being able to interact with nature is an important aspect for aging in place, but we will discuss how simply having a view of nature can also have positive results.
Being able to interact with our communities and nature is a great way to maintain social connections and create opportunities for connections. But, what about for individuals where leaving the home is either very exhausting or unsafe? In a study by Soga and associates (2020) they found that by simply having a view of greenery or nature from a home window not only increased one's self-esteem but also their reported happiness and life satisfaction. When we consider our loved ones who have difficulty leaving the home, making sure there is a proper view of nature can greatly improve their wellbeing at home.
Another thing to consider, green spaces can improve more physical activity and so it may encourage more social interactions. For our loved ones, even if they are unable to leave their homes, having the opportunity to interact with others from afar by simply waving or smiling with a passer-by helps maintain or create a connection with the community.
Aging in place goes beyond the home environment, but when our loved ones have difficulty leaving the home, windows and their view can help bridge the gap.
